Stormwater

Our Purpose

The City of Union City’s Stormwater Management Program is designed to protect residents, property, public infrastructure, and local waterways by effectively managing stormwater runoff throughout the community.

The program focuses on maintaining and improving the City’s drainage system, reducing flooding and erosion, protecting water quality, preventing illicit discharges, and ensuring that new development and redevelopment incorporate appropriate stormwater management practices..

Key Initiatives include:

Stormwater Infrastructure Maintenance

  • Inspect, clean, repair, and maintain storm drains, catch basins, manholes, pipes, canals, and other drainage structures.

  • Identify deficient or deteriorated infrastructure and prioritize improvements based on drainage needs and public safety.

  • Conduct routine inspections and document system conditions as part of the City’s stormwater maintenance program.

Drainage and Flooding Improvements

  • Address recurring drainage and flooding concerns throughout the City.

  • Develop and implement capital improvement projects to improve drainage capacity and system reliability.

  • Current and recent projects include stormwater improvements along Forrest Avenue and Morgan Road, as well as replacement of storm pipes along Mall Boulevard.

Stormwater Asset Management and Planning

  • Maintain an inventory of stormwater infrastructure and evaluate system conditions.

  • Identify system deficiencies, prioritize capital improvements, and coordinate stormwater needs with the City's broader Capital Improvement Program.

  • Strengthen long-term planning for drainage infrastructure, watershed protection, and channel restoration.

Water Quality and Pollution Prevention

  • Reduce pollutants entering the City's storm drainage system, streams, and other waterways.

  • Address illicit discharges and illegal connections.

  • Promote proper handling and disposal of oils, chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, sediment, and other potential pollutants.

The City’s Stormwater Management Program supports a safer, more resilient Union City by combining routine system maintenance, drainage improvements, responsible development practices, pollution prevention, and long-term infrastructure planning.
