Hiring 

I'm a new hire, when do I start accruing time and when can I use it?

You start accruing both vacation and sick leave on your first day of employment. You may use your sick leave as it accrues, however, there is a 90-day wait period before using vacation.

How do I change my deductions, set up direct deposit, or update my personal information?

Please visit the Employee Self Service portal within your Paycom app to make any updates to your personal information. If you have any questions, you may contact Human Resources. 

How long is my probationary period?

All new hires are on probation their first six (6) months of employment. If you are a Patrol Officer that is not certified in the state of Georgia, your probationary period is one (1) calendar year.


Leave / Time Off

How many vacation hours do I accrue per month?

Employees begin accruing sick leave upon hire and may use sick leave immediately for their own illness or medical appointments, or to care for an eligible family member as permitted by policy. Vacation leave is also accrued from the date of hire; however, employees may begin submitting request to use vacation leave only after completing 90 days of continuous employment.


All regular full-time City employees accrue vacation leave credit on the following basis:

0 year through the end of the 5th year – 8 hours per month

6th year through the end of 15th year – 12 hours per month

16th year and over – 16 hours per month.

Fire Service employees on twenty four (24) hour shifts accrue vacation leave credits on the following basis:

0 year through the end of the 5th year – 12 hours per month

6th year through the end of the 15th year – 18 hours per month

16th year and over 24 hours per month.

How many vacation hours roll over?

For regular full-time employees, no more than 120 hours can roll over per year. For Fire Service employees, no more than 180 hours can roll over per year.

What is a FMLA and how do I apply?

Eligible employees may take job-protected leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) for qualifying medical and family-related reasons, including the employee’s serious health condition, the birth or adoption of a child, or the care of an immediate family member with a serious health condition. FMLA provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave in a 12-month period, or up to 26 weeks for qualifying military caregiver leave. During approved FMLA leave, group health insurance coverage will continue under the same terms as if the employee were actively working.

Benefits 

How long does it take for my benefits to kick in?

Your benefit eligibility date is the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment. You will have access to enroll in the available plans after your first 2 days of employment. Example: if your hire date is 8/11/2024, your benefit eligibility date will be 10/1/2024.

Retirement

How do I prepare for retirement?

The City offers a 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan that allows employees to contribute a portion of their pay on a pre-tax and Roth basis to help save for retirement. Contributions are made through payroll deduction, and employees may change their deferral elections during designated enrollment periods or as otherwise permitted by the plan. These plans are subject to a vesting schedule and becomes fully vested after three (3) years of continuous service.


For information on enrolling or updating your 457(b) contributions, please either contact the Human Resources department or log into your One America account. For information on the Defined Benefit Plan through the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA), please contact the HR Director.

What is the pension plan and how do I apply?

The City proudly offers the GMA Pension, a defined benefit retirement plan that provides long-term financial security for eligible employees. The plan is 100% employer funded and features a five-year vesting period. Employees may be eligible to receive pension benefits at age 55 with at least 10 years of service, or at age 65 with a minimum of five years of service. This benefit reflects the City’s commitment to supporting employees throughout their careers and into retirement

 


Accidents

I injured myself at work, What do I do?

If you are suffering from a work-related injury, please fill out the First Report of Injury form, which can be found on Sharepoint. It must be completed within 24 hours by your supervisor and given to Human Resources.
