WINTER STORM FERN UPDATE: Information provided by Georgia Power
Georgia Power teams are making final preparations for Winter Storm Fern, which is expected to bring snow, ice, strong winds, and dangerously cold temperatures across Georgia. More than 10,000 Georgia Power personnel, contractors, and partner utility crews are engaged and ready to support restoration efforts as conditions allow.
What to Expect:
• Freezing rain and subfreezing temperatures may cause power outages
• Ice accumulation increases the risk of tree limbs snapping and falling on power lines
• Ice totals of ½ to ⅝ inch possible in parts of north Georgia, including Rome and Athens
• Wintry mix and rain beginning Saturday evening, continuing through Sunday
• Strong winds of 15–25 mph, increasing to 30 mph Monday
• Very cold temperatures early next week, with statewide lows below freezing
Georgia Power has been monitoring this storm for nearly a week and is pre-positioning crews near areas most likely to be impacted. Once conditions are safe, crews will begin assessing damage, clearing debris, and restoring power as quickly and safely as possible. Georgia Power has also suspended disconnections for non-payment through January 29 for all residential and commercial customers as part of the storm response.
