Union City’s Eagles Nest Sports Complex Receives Statewide Recognition for Excellence in Capital Projects

(Union City, GA)- The City of Union City is proud to announce that the Eagles Nest Sports Complex has been awarded Best Capital Project (Over $500,000) at the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) State Conference, honoring the City’s commitment to creating inclusive, innovative, and community-centered recreational spaces.

Re-opened in April 2025, the Eagles Nest Sports Complex represents a cornerstone of Union City’s R3 Master Plan: Reclaim, Renew, and Reimagine and stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished when vision, leadership, and community collaboration align.

The complex features a state-of-the-art artificial turf field designed for year-round use across youth baseball, softball, soccer, football, and adult recreation. Beyond athletics, it serves as a vibrant gathering place hosting concerts, festivals, summer camps, and citywide celebrations. Amenities include a walking trail, Kaboom! community-built playground, outdoor fitness equipment, volleyball courts, ping pong tables, a community garden, a skatepark, and life-size chess, creating a destination that promotes wellness, creativity, and connection for residents of all ages.

“This award reflects the heart of who we are as a City,” said Mayor Vince R. Williams. “The City Council and I are incredibly proud of the Eagles Nest Sports Complex, not only as a facility but as a symbol of Union City’s growth, unity, and investment in our residents’ quality of life. This recognition is a testament to our shared vision to build spaces that strengthen both body and community.”

The project was made possible through City funding and leadership, championed by Mayor Williams and City Manager Sonja Fillingame, along with partnerships that brought the community’s vision to life. The Arthur M. Blank Foundation and Kaboom! played key roles in constructing the playground through a community build that engaged residents, families, and volunteers.

Under the direction of Parks and Recreation Director Lee Blitch, the complex continues to redefine recreation in South Fulton County. Hosting events such as Opening Day for youth sports, the Juneteenth Celebration, Kids to Parks Day, the City Employee Appreciation Cookout, and GHSA high school athletic games, the facility has become a true hub for fitness, culture, and connection.

“Every corner of Eagles Nest was designed with the community in mind,” said Director Blitch. “This award validates the dedication of our residents, City leadership, and staff who worked together to make this space a reality. It’s more than a field—it’s a home for memories, growth, and community pride.”

The Eagles Nest Sports Complex stands today as one of the most comprehensive recreational destinations in the region, a reflection of Union City’s commitment to health, inclusivity, and progress.
